Anyone who called the Hartford Police Department hoping to speak to Lt. Stephen Miele this morning may have received a shocking message on his voicemail.
The message, which was left by an unidentified woman and was quickly erased by early this afternoon, began innocently enough, telling callers that they had reached Miele's voicemail and that he was not available to talk. But then the woman went on to describe an explicit sex act.
The obscene language prompted top department officials to launch an investigation into how the message was recorded on the voicemail system. The investigation also hopes to identify the woman who recorded the message and whether she is an employee of the police department or another city agency.
"Obviously it appears that someone intended to cause harm to Lt. Miele," said Assistant Chief Kevin Jones after listening to the message. "We just don't know who that is at this point."
Jones said the department received no complaints from the public about the message today, which he said was likely due to the fact that Miele has a different voicemail number than the one on which the explicit message was recorded.
Jones said anyone from the public asking to speak to Miele today most likely would have been transferred to the other extension, which contains a standard message from Miele. But he said it is possible members of the public might have heard the obscene message.
Jones said the investigation will try to determine if the voicemail account was specifically set up by someone trying to harm Miele's reputation.
Miele was unavailable for comment today.
The office of Mayor Eddie A. Perez also received a call about the obscene message today. Matt Hennessy, the mayor's chief of staff, declined to comment on the matter today, saying it was being addressed within the police department.
