I would think that the tobacco companies would have to actually market paan before we have a movement to ban it in schools in the U.S.. It sounds like a fascinating substance; I find it interesting how the author of the linked site only briefly mentions the tobacco paste contained within the leaves. It basically sounds like chewing tabocco that has been hidden in a leaf full of sweet spices. Now that I think about it, the tobacco companies probably will be marketing paan soon; the sweet aspect would really appeal to their major customer base: idiotic teenagers.
But I suppose I should try to be witty, so here goes:
1. I AM on strike with my Indian comrades. In the linked picture, I am the guy in the blue plaid shirt in the second row on the right hand side.
2. I am not protesting the tobacco bans and hold very little position on the paan.
3. What I am really protesting is the ban on knitting. As I have told my students time and time again, there is no reason that I can not knit a sweater at the same time as instructing them in the complexities of Macbeth. This is particularly true if the sweater is plaid. I have personally knitted all of the ties I wear to school on a daily basis. I am holding to my position that someday this eighties fashion will come full circle and then I will be super cool.
